About Aaron Peterson Photography

Aaron Peterson, Lake Superior ice cave, Munising, Michigan

Aaron Peterson is a photographer and filmmaker based near Lake Superior on Michigan's Upper Peninsula. For over 10 years he's been bringing the rugged landscape and unique way of life of his region to the world stage.

Along the way his work has appeared in publications like Outside, National Geographic Adventure, Outdoor Life and many more.

Today, Peterson and his young family live close to the land on a 100-year-old Scandinavian farmstead near Marquette, Mich. Ask him about his chickens.

“I wouldn’t trust just any photographer to canoe into the Canadian wilderness for a week and come back with the images for a make-or-break feature. Aaron brought back the goods, turning weather that could charitably be described as ‘adverse’ into unique and powerful images.”

-Jeff Moag, Editor, Canoe & Kayak

"Aaron Peterson raises chickens and tomatoes, grooms his own cross-country ski trails, has more kayaks and canoes than one man deserves, has hooked up with a really awesome sugar mama who has also given him two lovely children and, when he feels like it, heads off to shoot great pictures and write potent, insightful essays and articles. We're jealous of him, but we're also really glad he's part of our contributing team. Peterson comes back with the goods. Strong, active tales built with a diverse but not pretentious lexicon; potent photos that reveal an artful and insightful eye applied to photojournalism."

-Jeff Smith, Editor, Traverse magazine

“Aaron Peterson’s photographs of scenery and people at a photo shoot we commissioned were just breathtaking. His composition, use of natural light and ability to capture people and places at their best is a rare and wonderful talent.”

-Jenna Higgins Rose, Rose Media, LLC

"Wenonah Canoe and Current Designs has had a long standing relationship with Aaron, and for good reason!  Every year when we come asking for something new and fresh, he delivers.  Such a laid back easy guy to work with, and the photos are always money.  Our catalogs are viewed as some of the best creative works in the industry, and Aaron plays a huge part in that."

-Jake Greseth, Creative and Marketing Director, Wenonah Canoe and Current Designs Kayaks

"When we found out that President Obama was coming to NMU we needed to find a photographer we could count on -- to not only get great action photos of the president but do it in a way that showcased the university as well. Aaron's background in journalism combined with his expert photography skills and creative vision gave us that and more. He thoroughly captured the excitement of the day in many ways, despite difficult lighting, restrictive shooting conditions and an uncertain schedule. Best of all, the next morning we had 70 perfect and fantastic photos."

-Rebecca Tavernini, University Editor, Northern Michigan University

"I always look forward to working with Aaron. His intimate knowledge of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and experience as an avid outdoorsman are real assets: No matter the season, he knows what it takes to get dynamic shots of activities such as kayaking, mountain biking and ice climbing as well as capture the area’s amazing scenic beauty."

-Joan Lynch Luckett, Editorial Project Manager, Michigan Travel Ideas & Midwest Living

"Went through two other photographers who could not grasp the idea of our campaign.  Then we came to Aaron who not only knew immediately what we were trying to do, but added to the creative discussion of our campaign.  Our campaign has now evolved to focus more on the concept which is delivered in the photography rather than using the photography as part of the concept."

-Patrick Bosse, Media Director, Perry Ballard Incorporated

"It has been a real pleasure working with Aaron over the past two years.  We have been extremely impressed with his writing and photography work.  He understands our region and can express it in both words and images"
-Tom Nemacheck, Executive Director, Upper Peninsula Travel & Recreation Association
Aaron's writing is spot on--so clear, lively and real that you can almost reach out and touch what he is writing about. I have thoroughly enjoyed each story that Aaron has written for us!

-Elizabeth Edwards, Managing Editor, Traverse, Northern Michigan's Magazine
